Conversation Club: Neoclassical Elegance in Ragusa Ibla
The Conversation Circle, also known as the "Café of the Nobles", is a neoclassical building located in Ragusa Ibla, on Corso XXV Aprile. Built as an exclusive meeting place for the local nobility, it stands out for its neoclassical style, which contrasts with the surrounding Baroque. Today, through guided tours, it is possible to discover its historic interiors.
Origins and History
Founded in 1830 by a few local families, the Circolo di Conversazione was created as an exclusive space for the nobility. In an era of change, with the rise of the bourgeoisie, nobles sought a private place to socialize away from public cafés. Inspired by Italian literary cafés and English gentlemen's clubs, it became a center for conversation and social gatherings against the backdrop of the Italian unification events.
Neoclassical Architecture
The facade of the Club features a neoclassical style, with lines inspired by Greek temples, in stark contrast to the baroque forms of the neighboring buildings. This architectural choice reflected the taste of the founders, who preferred a more sober aesthetic.
The Interiors
The interior is decorated with red damasks on the walls, period armchairs, frescoes, and chandeliers. The Hall of Mirrors, with mirrors framed in gilding, is one of the most famous rooms.
